GREENHOUSE EFFECT

The name comes from the incorrect analogy with the warming of air inside a greenhouse. Some greenhouse effect is normal in the earth's atmosphere. Without the Earth's greenhouse effect the average temperature of the planet would be minus 0.4 degree F rather than the current average of 57 degrees F. Many gases have an effect on the Earth's temperature but there are three which predominate: water vaper (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and Ozone(O3). If we eliminated these three 'greenhouse' gases the greenhouse effect would be reduced proportionately as follows: H2O by 36%; CO2 by 9%; O3 by 3%.
